Starting Up

It can be pretty overwhelming to start a business on the Internet. There's plenty to think about, and probably a few things most people don't quite understand. There are a lot of books out there on running a business on the internet and out of your home.  But they only take you so far.  VermiCo will train you completely how to set up and get your business up and running.  There are a few things we would recommend to get you thinking in the right direction.  The list below should give you a good idea of what you need to get started.

  • A reasonably good (but not extravagant) computer.

You don't need something with all sorts of cool little features, but do get something with a reasonably fast modem (28.8kbps or better).  After all, you'll be spending a lot of time connected to the Internet!
  • Internet access.

You'll need to find an Internet Service Provider (ISP) so that you can connect to the Internet. This typically runs from about $15 to $30 a month (we pay $20 for unlimited access).
  • An HTML editor.

You don't have to have one, but you'll find life is a whole lot easier with one.   VermiCo will design a custom web site for you using Microsoft's Front Page 2000.  Owning Front Page will allow you to make unlimited changes to your website as your business evolves.
  • A permit or license.

Check with your city, province/state to see if they require you to purchase a permit or license for operating a home business. Be sure your zoning regulations allow you to operate a business from your home.
  • Company registration fees.

You should register a company name for your business, even if you're a sole proprietor.  " VermiCo" is our dba name registered with the state of Oregon.  The cost is about $12 per year.  This allows us to take checks to our bank with our company name on them and ensures no one else will use this name for their business in our state.
  • Furniture (if you don't already have it).

Don't go overboard; just get what you need to work comfortably in your home. A good computer desk, possibly a printer, and good lighting is usually enough to start with.
  • Optional but not required:
    • A fax machine or fax software in your computer.  Some folks are still nervous about giving their credit card number over the internet.  Most realize the safety of a secure page with encryption, but some prefer to fax you their orders.  The shopping cart that VermiCo will set you up with allows the customer to print out the order in fax form since there are some who would like the ability to fax their order to you.
    • A good accounting system.  VermiCo will teach you the accounting system we use and how to keep good records.  We use Quick Books Pro 2000 that keeps track of ordering, invoices, purchase orders and prints receipts for us.  At the end of the year simply print a report for your accountant and it is done.
