Getting the Word Out

Having your own web site is not enough.  It is critical to be found.  VermiCo has spent thousands of dollars and many hours learning the secrets to getting placed on the search engines.

VermiCo will design your custom web site paying attention to detail on the pages that can be seen by your customer but even more importantly, paying attention to the html code that can only be seen by the search engine spiders.  We will personally and individually submit your site to all of the major search engines.

Another practice many other Vermiculture businesses use is the practice of harvesting email addresses and sending mass mailing to try and drum up business.    This is called spamming.  VermiCo does not practice this and would discourage you from using this method to promote your business.

What's Spam?

"Spam" is the slang term for Unsolicited Commercial Email (UCE). It's when someone you don't know harvests your email address (from classified ads, links, your website, newsgroups, or a number of other places) and emails you some type of offer.

Typical offers are for healthcare products, stocks, business opportunities ... the list is endless.

The Effects of Spam (also known as: Why you shouldn't  spam!)

Spamming is considered poor business practice. Why?

  • You can make people very angry. No one likes to receive junk mail, which is exactly what spam is. It's a waste of their time.
  •   Some of these angry people will report you to your ISP.  And many ISPs will shut you down. Your protests will likely not do you any good.
  • ISPs spend a lot of time cleaning up after spammers and may bill you for the damage you caused, or even take you to court.
  • Spam can fill up a mailbox fast.  Not everyone has unlimited email, and spam can cause a mailbox to get full and any additional messages to be lost. This often causes the enraged people to report spammers to their ISPs!
  • Your email goes to an untargeted audience.  Sure, maybe you'll get a few responses to your spam - but most people will ignore it or turn you in to your ISP. It's not worth the trouble, and there are far more effective and acceptable ways to do business online.

How Do You Know If You're Spamming?

The safest thing to do is avoid sending to email someone if you have the slightest doubt about what you're doing. There are no hard and fast rules, but here are a few guidelines:

  • Never send email to harvested addresses. Just because you see a classified ad from someone who you think has an interest in your offer, does  not give you the right to email them.
  • Don't post ads in newsgroups that don't allow them.  Most newsgroups do not allow ads of any kind.
  • Only email people who have specifically requested your information. If someone emails you and asks for more information, go for it.
